DIY stock for FT
« on: July 08, 2017, 08:39:47 PM »
I have been chomping at the bit lately to make another stock for my HW97. I did start on a laminated one but the laminate i had jusr wasnt good enough.
Davey gave me apiece of wood that we think is possibly Matai, so i made a start last week.
Thanks to EBay I got a 35mm core box bit that is spot on for inletting.

Next was sketching on the shape I'm after. Because this will be used for field target, the fore stock is very deep compared to a std rifle. So the photos show various stages of shaping and a dress rehearsal.

A couple more shots. I just kind of went to town with the router. I still have to shorten the stock, which is why it looks so long.
Stopped for the night to watch the All Blacks, but I have glued a contrasting hard wood on the heel and palm rest.

A bit more work carried out today. Nostrils full of dust, but happy. I had just wet the wood to raise the grain for sanding, so it looks a little dull. Next step cut fore end and butt to length.

Haha, I will use Photoshop and make it look good for ya.

Drilled all holes and fitted the cheek riser last night. Then first soaking with linseed, varnish and turps. Really darkened the wood, so it's not really hard wood.
Before I put that on I had a quick shoot and it feels really good, I'm quite excited about this one. I have made other stocks and a couple just haven't felt right, but I feel good about this one.

Basically finished now. Just a couple more coats of oil to well and truly seal it.

All finished now. Tonight I fitted the T50 and made a new set back trigger blade and shorter trigger weight screw. Hoping for some ok weather tomorrow to try it out in the field.

Thanks Dingo. Surprised slyrod hasn't chimed in with good wood anecdotes.

Thanks for keeping that clean at least Sly.

Yes, we are quietly breeding world champions here south of the Manawatu gorge. They are all secret weapons kept under strict confidentiality waiting to be unleashed.
